Artist
Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) led French Romanticism and was the great colourist of his century, setting hot pigments against cold ones to make paint vibrate rather than merely describe. He kept a journal for most of his life that remains one of the best accounts we have of how a painter thinks. Where his rival Ingres prized the clean contour, Delacroix prized movement, and the argument between them shaped French painting for fifty years.
