Giambattista Tiepolo

The Banquet of Cleopatra

US$ 711.00

Cleopatra holds a pearl above a glass of vinegar, about to dissolve it and win her wager with Mark Antony that she can consume a fortune in a single meal. Tiepolo stages the moment as Venetian theatre — marble columns, a dwarf, a greyhound, servants in silk — with the whole company suspended in the instant before the pearl drops.

Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770) was the last of the great Venetian decorators, working across ceilings and altarpieces in Venice, Wurzburg and Madrid. His speciality was luminous, silvery light and steep illusionistic perspective that makes solid ceilings appear to open onto sky. He died in Madrid in the service of the Spanish crown.
