Gas lamps along the Arles waterfront throw long broken reflections into the river while the Plough hangs overhead and a couple walks the near bank. Van Gogh painted it outdoors at night, a year before the more famous Saint-Remy night sky, using candlelight on his hat brim to see the palette. The blues here are observed rather than invented.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was fascinated by the problem of painting night without resorting to black, and tackled it repeatedly during his Arles period in this canvas, the Night Cafe and Cafe Terrace at Night. He wrote to his brother Theo about wanting to paint a starry sky above all else. This version predates The Starry Night by roughly nine months.
