Artist
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525-1569) painted a cycle of six panels following the turning year, of which five survive and this is the most admired. He worked for wealthy Antwerp patrons while handing the foreground of nearly every picture to ordinary working people. Little is recorded of his life, but the paintings show someone who looked at labour, weather and landscape with unusual attention and no condescension.
