Artist
Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) was born into the royal house of Travancore and trained partly by observing a visiting British portraitist, developing an oil technique unusual in India at the time. Alongside his mythological subjects he painted a great many portraits and studies of women, which are now often considered his most sensitive work. He travelled widely across India seeking models and regional dress.
