Artist
Alexander Ivanov (1806-1858) spent twenty years in Rome working on a single painting, supported by a modest stipend and increasing doubt, producing hundreds of studies and abandoning almost everything else. He returned to Russia with the finished canvas in 1858 and died of cholera six weeks later, aged fifty-two. It is the most famous unfinished-feeling masterwork in Russian art.
