Artist
Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) painted the same mountain outside Aix more than eighty times, working the motif until landscape became a question about how vision itself assembles a scene from patches of colour. He was dismissed for most of his career and worked in near-isolation. Both Picasso and Matisse called him the father of modern art, and the claim is hard to argue with.
