Joseph Mallord William Turner

The Fighting Temeraire

US$ 645.00

The Fighting Temeraire shows the veteran warship that fought at Trafalgar being towed up the Thames by a squat, smoking steam tug to be broken up for scrap. The old ship rides pale and ghostly against a blazing sunset, the tug black and businesslike ahead of her. This reproduction brings that elegiac meeting of two ages into your space.

Artist

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) was the most radical English painter of his generation, pushing landscape toward pure light and atmosphere decades before the Impressionists. Admitted to the Royal Academy schools at fourteen, he spent a long career dissolving solid form into weather, steam and sun. He exhibited this painting at the Royal Academy in 1839, declined every offer to sell it, and left it to the nation on his death.
