Artist
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was born in Florence to American parents and became the leading society portraitist of his generation on both sides of the Atlantic. After the Madame X scandal drove him from Paris to London, he built a career on portraits of extraordinary technical fluency before largely abandoning the genre for landscape and murals. He worked wet-into-wet at speed, which gives his best portraits their sense of an unrepeatable moment.
