Artist
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) painted this group portrait in his sixties, after bankruptcy, the loss of his house and collection, and the deaths of his partner and his son. It is the last great commission of his life. He gave five cloth guild officials a moment of ordinary interruption and made it monumental without a trace of flattery.
