Artist
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) painted this in his ambitious early Amsterdam years, when dramatic gesture and theatrical lighting were his stock in trade and commissions were plentiful. He lived in the Jewish quarter of the city and drew on those connections for Hebrew texts and models. The looser, quieter manner of his late work was still decades away.
