Pierre-Auguste Renoir

A Girl with a Watering Can

US$ 720.00

A small girl in a blue dress trimmed with lace stands on a garden path holding a watering can she is far too small to use, flowers scattering into loose colour around her. Renoir gives her the frontal seriousness of a formal portrait and then dissolves the entire garden behind her into flecks.

Artist:

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) began as a porcelain painter and became the Impressionist most devoted to human warmth — children, dancers, gatherings, dappled light on skin. He later broke with Impressionism, seeking the solidity of Raphael and Ingres. Severe arthritis crippled his hands and he went on painting with brushes strapped to them.
