Artist:
Frans Hals (c.1582-1666) painted with a speed and visible brushwork that no contemporary matched, catching laughter, tipsiness and momentary expression in a way that looks almost photographic. He spent his whole career in Haarlem, produced enormous civic group portraits, and died poor. The Impressionists claimed him as an ancestor.
