Artist:
James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was born in Massachusetts, trained in Paris and settled in London, where he argued for art as arrangement rather than storytelling. He titled his pictures like music — symphonies, nocturnes, arrangements — and sued Ruskin for saying he flung a pot of paint at the public. He won a farthing in damages.
