Thomas Cole

The Consummation of Empire

US$ 690.00

The third canvas of The Course of Empire shows the same bay at the height of its wealth — marble colonnades on both shores, a triumphal procession crossing the bridge, the harbour dense with gilded shipping. Cole meant the series as a warning, and this is the moment before it turns. The mountain peak from the earlier scenes is still visible behind the columns.

Artist:

Thomas Cole (1801-1848) emigrated from Lancashire as a boy and founded the Hudson River School, the first native tradition of American landscape painting. He alternated between direct studies of American wilderness and grand allegorical cycles warning about the fate of civilisations. He died at forty-seven with his second great cycle unfinished.
