Fitz Henry Lane

Owl’s Head, Penobscot Bay

US$ 645.00

A headland and moored vessels sit under an enormous still sky, the water glassy and the light so evenly diffused that almost nothing casts a shadow. Lane reduces incident to nearly nothing and lets the horizontal calm carry the picture. The style became known as Luminism, though the term was invented long after his death.

Artist

Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) was disabled from early childhood and worked mostly around Gloucester, Massachusetts, training first as a commercial lithographer before turning to marine painting. His pictures of the New England coast are marked by extreme stillness and precise, almost silent light. Largely forgotten after his death, he was rediscovered in the twentieth century as a central Luminist figure.
