Claude Lorrain

Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba

US$ 621.00

The sun sits low and directly on the horizon between colonnaded palaces, its light laid in a broken path across the harbour water while tiny figures load boats in the foreground. The biblical embarkation is almost incidental — the subject is the light. Turner admired this painting so much that he left two of his own to the National Gallery on condition they hang beside it.

Artist

Claude Lorrain (c.1600-1682) was born in Lorraine, settled in Rome and effectively invented the idealised classical landscape, composing imaginary ports and pastoral scenes around the position of the sun. He kept a book of drawings recording each finished painting to protect against forgery. English collectors and landscape gardeners of the eighteenth century treated his compositions as a design template.
