Abanindranath Tagore

The Victory of Buddha

US$ 564.00

The Buddha sits in meditation, washed in pale golden light, as the forces of Mara dissolve around him into little more than atmosphere. Abanindranath worked in a wash technique adapted from Japanese painting, building the image in translucent layers rather than the opaque oils of academic practice. The deliberate softness was a stylistic argument as much as an aesthetic one.

Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951) founded the Bengal School and led a conscious turn away from Western academic realism toward Mughal, Rajput and East Asian sources, seeking a modern Indian art rooted in Asian traditions rather than European ones. Nephew of Rabindranath Tagore, he taught at the Government School of Art in Calcutta and shaped a generation of Indian painters. His wash technique came partly from Japanese artists who visited Calcutta in the early 1900s.
