Artist
Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) drew heavily on Sanskrit drama and the epics for his subjects, treating Kalidasa’s Shakuntala almost as a recurring character across multiple canvases. His mythological pictures gave nineteenth-century Indian audiences their first widely shared visual vocabulary for figures previously imagined only through text and performance. He died at 58, shortly after being awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind medal.
