Giovanni Bellini

Holy Allegory

US$ 657.00

Figures stand on a marble terrace beside a still lake — the Virgin enthroned, saints, children playing with fruit at a tree — with no agreed explanation of what is actually happening. Bellini gives the scene the calm of an ordinary afternoon while every element seems to carry a meaning nobody has convincingly decoded. It is among the most argued-over pictures of the Italian Renaissance.

Giovanni Bellini (c.1430-1516) transformed Venetian painting by adopting oil paint and using it to build the soft, saturated light that would define the Venetian school through Titian and beyond. He ran the largest workshop in Venice and taught both Giorgione and Titian. Durer, visiting in 1506, described him as still the finest painter in the city despite his age.
