Frederic Leighton

Flaming June

US$ 687.00

A woman sleeps curled in a translucent orange gown on a marble bench, a sea and an oleander branch behind her, the whole picture organised around the circular sweep of the fabric. Leighton painted it late in life as an unabashed exercise in colour and form rather than narrative. It sold for a few pounds in the 1960s when Victorian painting was worthless, and is now among the most recognised images of the period.

Artist

Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) was President of the Royal Academy and the only British artist ever raised to the peerage, though he held the title for just one day before his death. He trained across Europe and built a career on classical subjects executed with a decorative, colour-driven sensibility. His reputation collapsed with the Victorian revival’s reversal and recovered only in the late twentieth century.
