Artist
Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) ran the largest and most productive workshop in seventeenth-century Europe, serving as court painter and diplomat across several courts while producing altarpieces, portraits, mythologies and hunting scenes at extraordinary volume. He trained in Italy for eight years, absorbing Titian and Caravaggio, before returning to Antwerp. His fleshy, dynamic figures defined the Northern Baroque.
