Artist
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) trained as a lawyer in Moscow before turning to painting at thirty, and is widely credited with producing the first purely abstract works in Western art. He taught at the Bauhaus until the Nazis shut it down in 1933, then spent his final decade in Paris. He wrote extensively on the spiritual dimension of colour and form, believing painting could work on the viewer the way music does.
