Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the leading figure of the Vienna Secession, the movement that broke with Austria’s academic art establishment at the turn of the century. His so-called Golden Period, drawing on the Byzantine mosaics he had studied in Ravenna, produced the works for which he is best remembered. The Kiss was bought by the Austrian state directly off the wall of the 1908 Kunstschau exhibition — a public vote of confidence after years of official hostility toward his work.
