Mary Cassatt

The Child’s Bath

US$ 555.00

A mother bends over her daughter, washing the child’s foot in a basin, the two figures seen from close above in a composition borrowed from Japanese woodblock prints Cassatt collected and studied. She flattened the perspective and cropped the scene tightly, treating an ordinary domestic moment with the same formal seriousness as a history painting. It remains one of the most reproduced images of maternal tenderness in American art.

Artist

Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was the only American formally invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists, spending most of her career in Paris where she became close to Edgar Degas. She specialised in scenes of women and children, subjects considered minor by the academic hierarchy of the time, and painted them with a structural rigor drawn partly from her study of Japanese prints. Her advocacy also helped bring Impressionist painting into major American collections.
