Valentin Serov (1865-1911) painted this at twenty-two and never quite escaped it — it made his reputation instantly and remained the work Russians know him by. He was the son of two composers, studied under Repin, and went on to become the most sought-after portraitist in Russia, painting the imperial family while privately supporting the artists who opposed them.
