William-Adolphe Bouguereau

The Birth of Venus (Bouguereau)

US$ 627.00

Venus rises on a shell attended by nereids, tritons and putti, in a composition that deliberately answers Botticelli’s version four centuries later. Bouguereau’s surface is polished to invisibility, the anatomy exact, the whole thing unashamedly beautiful. A companion piece, in effect, to the Botticelli already in the collection.

Artist

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was the most successful academic painter of his age, winning every honour France could award, and was then dismissed for most of the twentieth century as everything modern art rebelled against. Recent decades have restored him. Whatever one makes of the sentiment, the technical control — particularly of flesh and water — has never been in doubt.
