Jose Maria Velasco

The Valley of Mexico

US$ 675.00

The valley opens out below the Santa Isabel range, cacti and scrub in the foreground, the lakes and the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl held in clear thin highland air. Velasco painted altitude better than almost anyone — you can feel how far the eye is travelling. A landscape of real grandeur from outside the European tradition.

Artist

Jose Maria Velasco (1840-1912) trained in botany, zoology and physics alongside painting, and brought all of it to bear on the Valley of Mexico, which he painted from every angle across four decades. He was the first artist to give Mexican landscape the seriousness that European painters gave the Alps. Diego Rivera, who studied under him, called him the greatest Mexican painter of the nineteenth century.
