Osman Hamdi Bey

The Tortoise Trainer

US$ 516.00

An elderly man in a red robe stands in a crumbling Bursa mosque chamber, a ney flute at his back, gravely attempting to train five tortoises. It is usually read as self-mockery about the pace of reform in the late Ottoman state, though Osman Hamdi never said so. Wry, beautifully painted and unusually tall — a natural fit for a narrow wall.

Artist

Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) was a painter, archaeologist and museum founder, trained in Paris and central to intellectual life in the late Ottoman Empire. He established Turkey’s first museum and its first fine arts academy, and he painted the Islamic world from inside it rather than as a European visitor looking in. That distinction runs through everything he made.
