Artist
Winslow Homer (1836-1910) began as a magazine illustrator covering the American Civil War and ended as the outstanding American painter of the sea, living alone on the Maine coast in a studio above the rocks. He made repeated winter trips to the Bahamas and Florida, and the tropical watercolours from those journeys fed the late oils. He answered questions about this painting’s meaning with deliberate unhelpfulness.
