Artist
John Constable (1776-1837) painted the few square miles of Suffolk he grew up in, over and over, at a time when English taste wanted Italian scenery and classical ruins. He made full-size oil sketches before the final canvas, a practice almost unheard of then. France recognised him before England did — this painting won a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1824 and made a deep impression on Delacroix, who reworked a canvas of his own after seeing it.
