Artist
Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) was the most celebrated woman artist of the nineteenth century and the first to receive the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour. She held official police permission to wear trousers so she could work in horse markets and slaughterhouses, studied animal anatomy at first hand, and lived openly with her partner Nathalie Micas for more than forty years. Her animals were admired precisely because they were observed rather than imagined.
