Artist
Ilya Repin (1844-1930) was born into a family of military settlers in what is now Ukraine and became the outstanding painter of Russian realism, working with the Peredvizhniki to carry art out of the academy and in front of ordinary audiences. He began this canvas at twenty-seven, after travelling the Volga to live among the men he wanted to paint, sketching them one by one and learning their names. It made his reputation at once.
