Artist
Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) left Pennsylvania for Paris and became the only American ever invited to exhibit with the Impressionists, brought in by Degas, who remained a lifelong friend and sparring partner. Barred as a woman from the cafes and backstage scenes her male colleagues painted, she turned to the domestic world she could observe closely and treated it as a serious subject rather than a sentimental one. She also persuaded wealthy American friends to buy Impressionist work, which is why so much of it hangs in the United States today.
