Artist
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely a decade, producing most of his best-known work in the last two years of his life in the south of France. He drew heavily on Japanese woodblock prints, borrowing their bold outlines, flat colour and off-centre compositions. He painted Almond Blossom in February 1890 at Saint-Rémy as a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a son and named him Vincent after his uncle. It remained the canvas closest to the family’s heart, and that nephew went on to found the Van Gogh Museum.
