Artist
Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) developed one of the most instantly recognisable styles in modern art — elongated necks, almond eyes, faces reduced to a serene mask — drawing on African sculpture and Italian Renaissance portraiture in equal measure. He worked in Paris among Picasso, Brancusi and Soutine, sold almost nothing during his lifetime, and died at 35 of tubercular meningitis. His portraits are now among the most valuable works of the School of Paris.
