Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was the last great master of the ukiyo-e woodblock tradition, producing more than eight thousand designs across a long career. He is remembered above all for two landscape series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, from which this print comes — the final set he completed before his death. His steep viewpoints, cropped foregrounds and flat planes of colour reached Europe in the 1860s and reshaped Western painting; Van Gogh copied this very design in oil.
