Artist
Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) worked for the Medici circle in Florence and painted mythological subjects with a linear grace that set him apart from the more sculptural Florentine mainstream. He fell under Savonarola’s influence late in life and his output narrowed sharply. Almost forgotten for three centuries, he was rediscovered by the Pre-Raphaelites and Ruskin in the nineteenth.
