Artist
Jose Maria Velasco (1840-1912) trained in botany, zoology and physics alongside painting, and brought all of it to bear on the Valley of Mexico, which he painted from every angle across four decades. He was the first artist to give Mexican landscape the seriousness that European painters gave the Alps. Diego Rivera, who studied under him, called him the greatest Mexican painter of the nineteenth century.
