Artist
Raphael (1483-1520) died at thirty-seven with this canvas unfinished in his studio, and it was carried at the head of his funeral procession. It was his final work and his most restless — the serene balance of his Vatican frescoes giving way to something darker and more theatrical, closer to what Michelangelo was doing and to what Mannerism would become.
