Jean-Honoré Fragonard

The Swing

US$ 609.00

A young woman swings through dappled garden light, one shoe kicked loose into the air, while a hidden young man below gazes up her skirt and an older man in shadow pulls the swing’s rope, unaware. Commissioned as a piece of private entertainment for a French nobleman, it became the defining image of Rococo playfulness on the eve of the Revolution. The pink and green palette and soft, tumbling brushwork are as famous as the story itself.

Artist

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) was the last great painter of the French Rococo, specialising in scenes of romantic pursuit, pleasure gardens and playful intimacy for private aristocratic patrons. A student of Boucher and briefly of Chardin, his loose, rapid brushwork was prized for its charm right up until the Revolution made his subject matter politically and morally suspect overnight. He fell out of fashion for decades afterward and died in relative poverty and obscurity.
