Artist
Edouard Manet (1832-1883) stood between Realism and Impressionism and declined to belong fully to either, refusing to exhibit with the Impressionists even as he shaped them. Two paintings made him notorious in the 1860s and he never quite shed the reputation. This was his last major canvas, painted from a reconstruction of the bar built in his studio while he was already gravely ill with the disease that killed him at fifty-one.
