Vincent van Gogh

The Sower

US$ 765.00

A sower strides across a violet field with an enormous yellow sun directly behind his head, the whole picture built from two complementary colours pushed as far as they will go. Van Gogh took the composition from Millet and repeated the subject obsessively. He wanted the sun to function as a halo without saying so.

Artist:

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted for barely a decade and produced roughly two thousand works, almost none of which sold in his lifetime. He worked through colour at extreme intensity, first in Paris and then in Arles and Saint-Remy. His letters to his brother Theo are among the great documents of artistic thought.
