Albert Bierstadt

The Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak

US$ 657.00

A Shoshone encampment occupies the foreground while an idealised mountain range rises behind it into luminous cloud, the whole scene assembled from sketches Bierstadt made on a surveying expedition west. The mountains are largely invented; the ethnographic detail is not. It sold for a record sum and helped shape how the American East imagined the West.

Artist

Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was born in Germany, trained in Düsseldorf and became the leading painter of the American West, joining overland expeditions and returning with sketches he worked into vast studio canvases. His theatrical lighting and heroic scale made him wealthy before changing taste and the rise of Impressionism left him unfashionable. He died in relative obscurity in New York.
