The son kneels in rags, head shaved, one shoe fallen away, while his father’s hands rest on his shoulders — one hand rendered masculine, the other visibly softer, a detail scholars have read for centuries. Rembrandt painted it in the last years of his life, after bankruptcy and the deaths of his partner and his son. Almost everything outside the two central figures dissolves into darkness.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) spent his final decade in reduced circumstances, having lost his house, his collection and most of his fashionable clientele, and produced in that period the most inward and loosely painted work of his career. The Return of the Prodigal Son is generally considered his last major canvas, left possibly unfinished at his death. It has been read as much as self-portraiture as biblical illustration.
