Artist
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) sold this canvas in Brussels in 1890 for 400 francs, months before his death, to the Belgian painter Anna Boch. It passed eventually into a Moscow collection, where it remains. The story of the single sale has been somewhat overstated over the years, but the essential point stands: commercial recognition arrived almost entirely after he died.
