A peasant family sits around a table by lamplight, sharing a plate of potatoes and pouring coffee, their faces coarse and their hands work-roughened. Van Gogh wanted the picture to smell of bacon fat and smoke, painting the figures deliberately unrefined to honour the dignity of manual labour rather than flatter it. It is the first painting he considered a true, finished statement of his intentions as an artist.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted The Potato Eaters in 1885 while living among peasant families in the Dutch village of Nuenen, years before he moved to France and adopted the brighter palette he is now known for. He regarded it as his first major work and defended its dark, earthy colours against friends who found it crude. The painting marks the transition from his early, Dutch-influenced period to the ambitions that would define the rest of his career.
