Billiard table, gas lamps and a scattering of late-night drinkers sit inside walls of clashing red and green, which Van Gogh chose deliberately to suggest the café as a place where a person could ruin themselves. He described it in a letter as one of the ugliest pictures he had made, and also one of the most successful at expressing what he intended. The warped floor and receding lamps push the room toward vertigo.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) worked with colour as an emotional tool rather than a descriptive one, often choosing combinations he knew would unsettle the eye. The Night Café was painted during his stay in Arles, the same period that produced Café Terrace at Night and The Bedroom, three views of the same small world he inhabited in the south of France. He considered it one of his most deliberate experiments in using colour to convey feeling rather than appearance.
