Artist
Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) was largely self-taught and became the most celebrated painter in Imperial Germany, equally at home in Frederician history painting and in unblinking studies of modern life. He drew obsessively, filling thousands of sheets. He was short, solitary and worked from direct observation to an almost forensic degree.
