Pieter de Hooch

The Courtyard of a House in Delft

US$ 618.00

A woman and child stand in a brick courtyard while another figure looks out through a passage toward the street beyond, the whole picture organised around receding rectangles of brick, doorway and sky. De Hooch makes the architecture do the emotional work. The stone tablet above the arch is a real inscription that survived from a Delft monastery.

Artist

Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684) worked in Delft alongside Vermeer and shared his interest in domestic interiors, orderly space and daylight, though his pictures give more attention to architecture and the passage between rooms. His Delft years produced his best work; a later move to Amsterdam and a turn toward grander subjects coincided with a decline. He is thought to have died in an asylum.
